In the autumn of 2007 we embarked on the research and development phase of a sound-based project on the Falkland Estate, Fife Scotland. Since then we have engaged in three phases of work: Arcadia (April 2008), an 8-channel audio piece produced for the tapestry gallery in Falkland Palace, Falkland Audiowalk (July 2009), a pre-recorded MP3 player-based walk around the grounds of House of Falkland and the Maspie Den gorge and, to conclude, Re-sounding Falkland (2010) a series of sited audio and video installations shown over a weekend in May 2010. These installations included Cascading, a 6-channel audio piece exploring the alleged ‘tuning’ of the nineteenth century cascades constructed in the grounds of the House of Falkland, Temple of Decision, a video installation which investigated the ruin of the eponymous nineteenth century folly, and Chase a yard worse than last, a live work which involved the playing of ‘Real’ Tennis, on the historic court in the grounds of Falkland Palace.

Cascading

Stereo version of 6-channel piece originally installed in the House of Falkland as part of the Re-sounding Falkland exhibition. The work combines field and hydrophone recordings of the cascades, combined with sine waves of the cascades’ dominant frequencies and male and female singers vocalizing these same tones.

Arcadia

A short binaural recording of the 8-channel sound work installed in the Tapestry Gallery, Falkland Palace. Arcadia was composed from field recordings made in the area of Falkland and a special recording of Sheena Wellington singing the Ballard John O’ Braidslie.

Bottle Dungeon

A one minute audio work alluding to the unseen subterranean space that exists beneath a trap door in a Falkland Palace storeroom. Palace guide Tom Playfair, reads a report of the last person to be kept in the dungeon. His voice is modified by convolution reverb, produced from measuring the acoustic signature of the.

Temple of Decision is a video installation that investigated the ruin of the eponymous nineteenth century folly. Utilising virtual acoustic modelling to recreate the acoustics of the building when still intact, we voice our thoughts on visiting the Temple and on the stories we have heard about the building and its uses.
